Mayor Uses TV Ad to Support Democratic Candidates
Mayor Zohran Mamdani has stepped into the political arena to endorse three Democratic candidates through a distinctive television advertisement. The ad was broadcast during the New York Knicks’ postgame coverage and aims to promote the candidacies of Darializa Avila Chevalier, Claire Valdez, and Brad Lander for House seats in New York City.
The 30-second advertisement seeks to leverage Mr. Mamdani’s popularity and the city’s enthusiasm for the Knicks. In the ad, shot on a basketball court and bathed in the Knicks’ orange color, Mr. Mamdani introduces the candidates and states, “This is the team. This is our year.”
Ms. Avila Chevalier and Mr. Lander are challenging incumbent representatives, while Ms. Valdez is pursuing an open seat. The ad, produced by the mayor’s top political adviser Morris Katz, cost about $110,000. The expense is shared among the three campaigns.
Mr. Mamdani expressed his confidence, saying, “It’s a new era in Knicks’ basketball, and it’s time for the same in our politics too.” He highlighted that this group of candidates reflects the spirit and dedication that can benefit New York City.
