Senator Mitch McConnell, former GOP leader from Kentucky, remains hospitalized over three weeks after being admitted for undisclosed health issues. Top Senate Republicans have maintained communication with McConnell during his hospital stay. Speculation about his condition continues due to the lack of detailed updates from his aides.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune spoke with McConnell over the phone, having a lengthy discussion that included national security among other topics. This conversation is part of Thune’s responsibility to stay informed about illnesses and absences within his conference, which holds a 53-47 majority.
Senator John Barrasso, the second-highest-ranking Senate Republican, also communicated with McConnell, having a 20-minute conversation regarding upcoming Senate races, the Supreme Court, and other topics. Barrasso’s spokeswoman, Kate Noyes, mentioned that McConnell was fully engaged and eager to return to Senate duties.
Republican strategist Scott Jennings joined the list of those who spoke to McConnell, mentioning their discussion over politics, foreign policy, and Senate history.
McConnell has been in the hospital since June 14, as per his office’s announcement, which stated he is receiving excellent care. Statements have assured the public of his ongoing recovery without providing specific details. The statement reiterated McConnell’s appreciation for the support he’s receiving.
The senator’s health issues follow multiple hospitalizations in the past years. In March 2023, McConnell was hospitalized with a concussion, missing several weeks of work after a fall. He has also experienced incidents where he froze up during news conferences and recovered with assistance from colleagues. Additionally, McConnell faced earlier injuries, including a 2019 fall at his Kentucky home, resulting in shoulder surgery, and earlier bouts with polio affecting his mobility.
McConnell has been active in the Senate since his election in 1984. He served as the Republican leader from 2007 until last year and remains involved as a senator. Despite health challenges, he often attends Senate sessions, occasionally using a wheelchair for mobility.
