Pennsylvania is currently experiencing its largest measles outbreak in 35 years, with the state reporting over 1,100 cases. Experts believe the actual number might be even higher. On Friday, the state recorded its sixth measles-related death. This involved an unvaccinated 39-year-old woman from Franklin County. The county coroner indicated her death was due to a ‘probable acute cardiac event’ linked to measles complications. Her case is recognized as a measles-associated death according to the state’s health department.
Governor Josh Shapiro has publicly criticized Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for promoting a decline in measles vaccinations. Shapiro refused Kennedy’s help, stating the state had sufficient resources to manage the outbreak. As part of local efforts, more than 5,700 MMR vaccinations have been given out at 198 clinics since late April when the outbreak began. The state health department reports a surge in vaccination interest, with over 56,000 doses administered in September alone, compared to the usual 25,000 doses.
Pennsylvania health officials have been in contact with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) throughout the outbreak. Although the CDC has only acknowledged two deaths, Pennsylvania formally requested federal support via a September letter. The CDC plans to send additional support to assist in the outbreak investigation and strengthen response efforts.
