Hollywood often embraces a particular narrative in war movies: a lone individual faces overwhelming challenges, makes split-second decisions that alter battles and wars, and demonstrates unwavering resilience. The earliest recipients of the Medal of Honor, the Andrews’ Raiders, were portrayed in the 1956 film The Great Locomotive Chase, which dramatizes their audacious Confederate train heist. Audie Murphy, another Medal of Honor recipient, starred in the 1955 film To Hell and Back, depicting his courageous stand against German forces during World War II. Murphy continued to build his acting career, appearing in 40 more films.

In more recent times, Black Hawk Down (2001), directed by Ridley Scott, recounts the harrowing day in Mogadishu, Somalia, in 1993. Delta Force snipers Gary Gordon and Randy Shughart valiantly defended a downed pilot’s position, fully aware of the impossible odds against them.

His story is told in the 2016 film Hacksaw Ridge, starring Andrew Garfield. This film challenges genre norms and was awarded two Academy Awards.
