Erik and Lyle Menendez, who were convicted for the murders of their parents in 1989, have had their parole hearing rescheduled to March 2027, a year earlier than initially planned. This change is due to provisions in Proposition 9 that allow for an earlier parole hearing if new information or a change in circumstances suggests suitability for parole, as reported by The Orange County Register.
The brothers were convicted of the shotgun slayings of their parents, Jose and Mary Louise ‘Kitty’ Menendez, at their Beverly Hills home. They received life sentences without the possibility of parole, but in 2025, they were resentenced to life with the possibility of parole. This followed a renewed interest in their case from a Netflix series and a push from their supporters.
A statement from their family highlights the brothers’ rehabilitation efforts over nearly four decades, emphasizing their focus on accountability and service to others. These initiatives include creating a hospice program and establishing Green Space, which aims to give lifers a sense of purpose. Their family appreciates the parole board’s decision to reevaluate and advance the brothers’ parole hearing.
The charges against Erik and Lyle include claims of sexual abuse by their father, allegations the prosecution dismissed as a motive of greed. The brothers’ initial sentencing attracted significant media coverage, and they have remained in confinement at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego.
