The Metropolitan Museum of Art has announced the cancellation of its planned spring 2027 exhibit celebrating designer John Galliano. This decision casts uncertainty on the upcoming Met Gala, which traditionally initiates the annual exhibition.
Max Hollein, the museum director, issued a statement confirming the cancellation, stating, “Following thoughtful discussions with John Galliano, we have together decided not to proceed with the exhibition.” The initial announcement of the exhibition honoring Galliano sparked significant backlash due to antisemitic and racist statements he made in 2010 and 2011.
The designer had previously apologized for his remarks via a social media post, announcing his withdrawal from the exhibit. Galliano wrote, “After much reflection and discussion with The Met and all those involved, I have decided, with great sadness, that it is best for the exhibition not to take place at this time.” He expressed deep remorse for the harm caused by his statements, particularly to the Jewish and Asian communities.
Despite being convicted in a French court for his statements in 2011, Galliano is still celebrated in the fashion industry, particularly for his contributions as the creative director of Christian Dior until he was dismissed. After Dior, he began leading the Maison Margiela fashion house in 2014, maintaining his position for ten years. His association with Anna Wintour, the organizer of the Met Gala, underscores his longstanding influence in the fashion world.
The museum has announced that the canceled exhibit will be replaced by another show, the details of which have not yet been disclosed.
