The New York Mets emerged victorious in the first Subway Series of the season against the New York Yankees, in an intense game on Sunday afternoon. In the bottom of the 10th inning, the Mets had runners on first and third with one out. Rookie Carson Benge stepped up to the plate and delivered a pivotal moment.
Benge hit a chopper that passed over Yankees relief pitcher Tim Hill. After the game, Benge remarked, “Once it went over the pitcher’s head I kind of knew.” Meanwhile, Yankees infielders Anthony Volpe and Max Schuemann collided in an attempt to field the ball, yet neither succeeded. Marcus Semien seized the opportunity to dash home, securing the game-winning run for the Mets who triumphed with a 7-6 score.
Earlier in the game, the Yankees held a 6-3 lead going into the ninth inning. Mets player Tyrone Taylor took to the plate with Benge and Juan Soto on base, with two outs. Taylor sent a dramatic pitch left, off David Bednar, tying the game. This was Taylor’s third home run of the season, and he stated, “I didn’t know it was going to stay fair. I kind of waited there to see if it would.”
The Yankees exhausted a nine-game road trip with a 2-7 record, preparing for a seven-game homestand against the American League East rivals, the Toronto Blue Jays and the Tampa Bay Rays. Yankees player Aaron Judge noted, “Guys are playing tough and making the plays they need to but just coming up a little bit short. We’ve got to have a short memory, move on, and get ready … because we’ve got a big division opponent coming in.”
David Bednar, who blew a save opportunity, attributed the loss to his own performance, admitting that his ERA increased to 4.95. He expressed frustration by saying, “Overall, it’s unacceptable, especially in that spot. It’s just very frustrating.”
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza praised his team’s determination, stating, “We get down. We get punched in the face. We get back up.” Mendoza highlighted the match as a testament to their resilience, despite not playing their best. “Today was a perfect example when, like I said, we didn’t play our best game, and we still are able to shake hands at the end,” he added.
