The Mexican government announced plans to auction a plot of land within a country club where Nemesio Oseguera, also known as “El Mencho,” died during a military confrontation in February. The land’s previous ownership remains undisclosed, and authorities do not directly connect the property to El Mencho, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). The plot is located in the area where he was killed in Tapalpa, Jalisco, on February 22, during an army operation.
The starting price for the land is approximately $750,000. This property is part of an auction lineup featuring 211 assets scheduled for Thursday. In recent years, the government has auctioned homes once owned by Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, the Sinaloa Cartel’s founder, currently incarcerated in the U.S.
The operation to eliminate the cartel leader, which utilized U.S. intelligence, concluded when Mexican special forces discovered Oseguera “hidden in the undergrowth” in Jalisco. Following the operation, a crucifix, religious candles, and a handwritten psalm were found in El Mencho’s residence, according to The Associated Press. Mexican authorities tracked El Mencho’s location via one of his romantic partners.
El Mencho’s death led to retaliation by the CJNG, resulting in roadblocks and vehicle fires across two-thirds of Mexico. The violence claimed dozens of lives, including 25 members of Mexico’s National Guard. In 2025, the U.S. designated CJNG as a Foreign Terrorist Organization. El Mencho’s burial in March featured a golden casket, significant floral arrangements, and a strong military presence in Zapopan, near Guadalajara.
Last month, the cartel faced another setback when top leader Audias Flores Silva, known as “El Jardinero,” was captured while hiding in a roadside ditch in northwestern Mexico. Silva, seen as a potential successor to El Mencho, had a $5 million reward issued by the U.S. for information leading to his arrest. Recently, a U.S. federal grand jury added methamphetamine trafficking and money laundering conspiracy charges against Silva.
