Republican congressional candidate Michael Bouchard, a Bronze Star veteran, secured a victory in the GOP primary aiming to represent Michigan’s 10th Congressional District. Supported by an endorsement from former President Donald Trump, Bouchard’s impressive military background has become a centerpiece of his campaign.
Bouchard’s success is crucial for Republicans, who wish to maintain their slim majority in the U.S. House of Representatives. While Bouchard’s credentials are promising, the district presents challenges.
In past elections, incumbent Rep. John James, a Republican, narrowly won against Democratic challenger Carl Marlinga. James had a 51.1% to 45.0% victory in 2024, and a tight 48.8% to 48.3% win in 2022. James is now pursuing a gubernatorial bid, emphasizing Michigan’s economic prosperity as his motivation. “My family, like many others, chose our state for the opportunities in manufacturing and automotive industries,” James stated.
Bouchard emphasizes his military service in the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions. He has served in Iraq and at the U.S. southern border. Like James, Bouchard received a Bronze Star for his involvement in the joint task force against ISIS. Although new to politics, he aims to redirect the country away from previous policies.
In a campaign video, Bouchard stated, “Under President Trump, I led missions on the southern border. We got the job done, but on day one, Joe Biden shut us down.” He highlighted issues such as human trafficking and weak leadership, declaring, “I’m ready to lead America back.” On his website, Bouchard focuses on boosting American manufacturing, completing the southern border wall, and enhancing parents’ roles in educational systems.
Trump expressed his support via Truth Social, referring to Bouchard as a “brave U.S. Army veteran.” He emphasized Bouchard’s service and fighting spirit that would benefit Michigan’s 10th district.
Bouchard has gained endorsements from key figures, including U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, Majority Whip Tom Emmer, and GOP Conference Chair Lisa McClain.
Bouchard progresses to the general election on November 3.
