Michael Lombardi has resigned from his position with the North Carolina football program. The university announced his departure on Thursday. Lombardi, known for his long career in the NFL, had been serving as the general manager for UNC’s football team.
His decision to step down follows his placement on paid administrative leave over a month ago. This move was part of an internal investigation. UNC’s Office of University Counsel confirmed that the investigation would continue despite his resignation.
Lombardi’s Tenure at UNC
Lombardi joined the University of North Carolina in 2025. He was a key figure as Bill Belichick began his role. Lombardi was considered one of Belichick’s trusted advisors in the program.
In a press release sent to Fox News Digital, the university stated that Lombardi resigned effective September 3, 2026. This came after an internal investigation became public in July. The specific allegations have not been disclosed, with UNC citing confidentiality regarding personnel matters.
Belichick’s Response
Bill Belichick, head coach at UNC, addressed the situation briefly on July 30. He noted that the team was dealing with ongoing matters and making adjustments as needed.
The Tar Heels began their preseason camp shortly after the news, focusing on their preparations for the upcoming season.
Lombardi as a High-Paid Executive
Lombardi, when he was appointed general manager, was the highest-paid executive in college football operations, with a salary of $1.5 million annually. His hiring was one of Belichick’s earliest moves after taking the job at UNC.
Despite the administrative challenges, the Tar Heels recently achieved a significant victory against TCU in Ireland. This marked a strong start to Belichick’s second year, following a 4-8 season in his debut.
