Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed has faced criticism after recounting an incident at a Detroit liquor store during a podcast appearance. El-Sayed admitted to destroying property in reaction to comments about his beard’s length, which holds religious significance in Muslim communities.
In his appearance on the YouTube show Intellectually Petty, El-Sayed described the incident. After the store clerk commented about his beard being too short, El-Sayed took a bottle of vodka, smashed it, and left the store.
Republicans have seized on this account in the competitive Senate race. RNC spokesperson Hunter Lovell criticized El-Sayed, claiming he displays aggression over matters of faith. Lovell characterized El-Sayed as having anger management issues, suggesting he should not hold a Senate position.
“Abdul El-Sayed thinks he gets a free hall pass by using his religion as a way to promote violent extremism,” Lovell stated.
El-Sayed’s campaign responded to the criticism by highlighting his advocacy for the people, contrasting it with more trivial concerns they attribute to other politicians. Campaign spokesperson Roxie Richner commented that El-Sayed’s anger focuses on the exploitation of everyday individuals.
El-Sayed currently faces a tight Democratic primary to succeed outgoing Senator Gary Peters. Competing against him are fellow progressive Mallory McMorrow and Rep. Haley Stevens, who aligns more closely with the establishment.
El-Sayed presents himself as the most progressive candidate. He supports “Medicare for all,” free college education, and the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). His stance on U.S. relations with Israel, especially during the Gaza conflict, has attracted some scrutiny.
The candidate has distanced himself from controversial figures and condemns all forms of religious violence. After a synagogue attack in Temple Israel Michigan, El-Sayed labeled it terrorism, emphasizing there is no justification for violence against innocents.
The Michigan Senate primary is scheduled for August 4. Voters are tasked with determining their preferred Democratic candidate in this highly scrutinized race.
