In Jackson, GA, Republican Representative Mike Collins emerged victorious in a high-stakes race for the GOP Senate nomination in Georgia. Running as a staunch supporter of President Donald Trump, Collins defeated former college football coach Derek Dooley in a closely watched runoff. This victory sets the stage for a crucial election against Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff in November, which could determine if Republicans maintain their majority in the Senate during the fall’s midterm elections.
Georgia’s Republicans regard Ossoff as a vulnerable Senate Democrat, marking him as a target. Collins, who represents Georgia’s 10th Congressional District, carries the legacy of being the son of the late Representative Mac Collins. He co-owns a trucking company with his wife.
Collins managed to distinguish himself in a competitive field that included Dooley and Representative Buddy Carter. Although no candidate secured over 50% in the primary, Collins and Dooley advanced to the runoff. Trump’s endorsement followed, reinforcing Collins’ campaign. Collins expressed confidence in the timing of Trump’s support.
Dooley, a lawyer and former University of Tennessee football coach, had the backing of Governor Brian Kemp and emphasized an outsider persona. Despite not securing Trump’s endorsement, Dooley remained committed to gaining the support of Georgia’s residents.
Collins criticized Dooley’s political inexperience and emphasis not having lived in Georgia for much of his life. He argued that a proven track record in politics was essential for winning the election. Collins emphasized party unity, stating that Republicans shared a mission to secure the seat for someone who would represent Georgia effectively.
The Republican primary reflected the influence of Trump’s endorsement power, as his preferred candidates often succeeded in various states. However, the streak halted when his eleventh-hour endorsement of Representative Randy Feenstra in Iowa was insufficient for a win.
