Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth Wins Republican Primary for Governor

Last week, candidates for governor attended an event in Morgan, Minnesota. Among them was Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar, who secured her party’s primary victory. Republican state house speaker Lisa Demuth emerged as the GOP primary winner, alongside Republican business figures Mike Lindell and Kendall Qualls.

According to the Associated Press, Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth successfully defeated MyPillow founder and Trump supporter Mike Lindell in the state’s Republican primary for governor. Demuth, 59, has led a state House that is nearly evenly split between Republicans and Democrats. Her campaign emphasized her skill in bipartisan cooperation. In the upcoming fall election, she will face Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar, who easily won her primary.

In the primary, Demuth competed against Lindell, who was endorsed by former President Trump last month, and Kendall Qualls, who gained the state Republican Party’s endorsement in May. Demuth claimed she was the most suitable Republican candidate to break her party’s long-standing run of defeats in gubernatorial contests.

Lindell drew significant attention during the primary, both positive and negative. Some state Republican leaders doubted Lindell’s electability, questioning his residency and business history. His support of Trump’s unfounded 2020 election denial claims raised concerns among Republicans about potential harm to his general election viability. Trump had lost Minnesota in each of his presidential bids. His administration’s immigration enforcement surge in Minnesota caused unrest and resulted in two fatalities.

Demuth enjoyed a considerable fundraising edge over her competitors. She presented a campaign message emphasizing her confrontations with Democratic Gov. Tim Walz over state budget issues to champion conservative goals. She stated that her campaign would concentrate heavily on combating fraud within state government programs. Governor Walz chose not to seek a third term, opting to address fraud in state programs during his remaining time in office.
