Mom’s Best Furniture Find: A Mid-Century Modern Treasure

Erin Shuford, a mother of two from Florida, has built a career in restoring and refurbishing furniture. After the birth of her second child, she faced challenges when returning to work. Seeking a work-from-home opportunity, she discovered furniture flipping. “I sold two pieces and left my job impulsively,” Shuford shared. “Furniture flipping felt like where I was meant to be.”

As an experienced thrifter, Shuford combined her passion for finding unique items with her eye for design. “I worked hard to make it successful, and I have no regrets,” she expressed. Recently, she experienced what she considers the highlight of her career.

It began with a call from a friend about a Broyhill Brasilia bedroom set. Known for its sculpted walnut design and geometric details, the line is highly valued by collectors. “When I saw the pictures, I almost dropped my phone,” Shuford recounted. Broyhill Brasilia furniture can command high prices, with complete sets fetching between $7,000 to over $10,000.

Surprisingly, the set was priced at just $115. “The market for this furniture is competitive, and finding it at a thrift store was rare,” she said. Her friend bought the set for her immediately.

Shuford spent 50 to 60 hours restoring the pieces. Using a detailed finishing process with products from Mohawk, she brought the set back to its original glory. “I sold it for $9,000 in under 24 hours on Facebook Marketplace,” Shuford revealed.

Reflecting on the experience, Shuford considers this her best find. “I might regret selling it, but knowing the new owner loves it is rewarding,” she mentioned. She finds Brasilia furniture infrequently, yet occasionally spots items on Facebook Marketplace or at estate sales.
