A tragic incident unfolded in Montana, taking the lives of eight family members during a Sunday dinner. A young girl is hailed as a hero for her actions in the wake of the devastating event.
The Incident
According to authorities, 44-year-old Alan Smith carried out a massacre at a home outside Billings. He killed eight relatives, including four children. This horrific event occurred weeks after his parents asked him to move out. Among the victims were Smith’s parents, who were also shot.
The Victims
The victims spanned four generations, from an elderly great-grandmother to a seven-year-old girl. Family friend Jennifer Mercer has organized an online fundraiser to assist with funeral expenses.
“First and foremost, the Billings Police Department extends our deepest condolences to everyone affected by this awful tragedy,” Sgt. Jeff Stovall said.
Response and Investigation
The Billings Police responded on Sunday evening. They heard gunshots before the house was engulfed in flames. Investigators have faced challenges due to the house’s destruction.
Assistant Fire Chief Matt Hoppel explained the efforts to fight the fire were delayed until the scene was secured. This allowed the fire to consume the home.
Family Impact
Brad Ireland identified the victims as his ex-wife, Megan Ghekiere, and their children Owen and Chloe Ireland. Ghekiere’s stepchildren, Landon and Charlotte Ghekiere, were also killed.
“Charlotte was the hero,” Mercer said. “She called 911 and tried to save her family.”
The Community’s Reaction
The incident has deeply affected the community, with Mercer describing the family as loving and close-knit. She noted that the tragedy is felt by those who never knew them.
“I feel like our entire community is devastated,” Mercer said.
Background
The Smith family had relocated from Seattle. After divorcing, Megan Ghekiere moved to Montana where she remarried. Her parents followed, buying a home nearby.
Alan Smith lived with his parents until asked to leave. When he returned unexpectedly, he committed the crimes amid a family dinner.
“There were many red flags,” Ireland said. “No one listened.”
Financial Support
Friends have set up GoFundMe accounts to provide financial assistance. One for Adam Ghekiere, who was working at the time of the tragedy, has raised nearly $100,000.
Separate funds for Landon and Charlotte have raised over $60,000. Efforts continue to support those affected.
National Context
This mass shooting represents the 22nd mass killing of the year. It is part of a troubling pattern of domestic disputes leading to violence, according to a database by the AP and USA Today.
Montana’s tragedy is the deadliest since a similar incident in Louisiana, involving a father killing eight children.
