The 79th Cannes Film Festival concluded with the prestigious Palme d’Or awarded to the Romanian film ‘Fjord.’ Directed by Cristian Mungiu, this multilingual drama stars Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve. It focuses on a devout Christian couple accused of child abuse.
Mungiu, transitioning seamlessly between English and French on stage, emphasized cinema’s role in addressing relevant societal issues. He noted the division and radicalization present in today’s world. ‘Fjord’ turns a child protection services inquiry into headline news, symbolizing the conflict between religious conservatism and social liberalism.
‘Fjord’ represents Mungiu’s second Palme win, following his 2007 victory for ‘4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days.’
The festival was less vibrant than previous editions, partly due to the absence of major American studios and globally recognizable stars on the red carpet. The lack of a standout favorite in the main competition added to the subdued atmosphere. Although many films received admiration, few inspired genuine love.
Remarkably, the top prizes for best director, actress, and actor each had multiple winners. Jury head, filmmaker Park Chan-wook, highlighted the diversity of the jury, including actress Demi Moore and director Chloé Zhao.
The best director award went to Polish director Paweł Pawlikowski for ‘Fatherland,’ shared with Spanish directors Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi for ‘La Bola Negra.’ Their film, set across various historical periods, interlaces stories of men whose lives occasionally overlap. It centers on an unfinished play by Federico García Lorca, a writer murdered by fascists at the Spanish Civil War’s onset.
