Nancy’s Early Symptoms
When Nancy, my daughter, started displaying unusual behavior around the age of 15 months, I tried to dismiss my concerns. Frequent ear infections seemed to be a plausible explanation. She was less like the cheerful, carefree child we knew, yet I hoped the changes were temporary.
Following a medical procedure to fit ear tubes, I felt optimistic. I believed this step might restore her usual lively demeanor. However, an unsettling feeling persisted. Although everything seemed normal from a medical standpoint, something seemed amiss.
Neuroblastoma often goes undetected due to vague symptoms. Nancy appeared healthy at face value but exhibited subtle signs that were troubling. Small behavioral and physical changes accumulated over time, driving my concern further.
The Diagnosis We Never Expected
Seven months later, we received the diagnosis that shattered our expectations. We entered the doctor’s office hoping for minor answers, not the words ‘stage 4 cancer.’ Nancy was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a severe blow. Suddenly, terms like ‘metastatic’ and ‘aggressive’ were part of our world.
The scans were astonishing — a large tumor pressed against her kidney, wrapping around her spine. The cancer had already spread to her bones, skull, and even orbital bones surrounding her eyes. How could this hidden danger remain undetected?
I revisited every detail in my mind: appointments, symptoms, moments I dismissed as minor. Could we have identified the cancer sooner? This question haunted me. Neuroblastoma symptoms often mimic everyday childhood ailments, complicating early detection.
Reflection on Missed Opportunities
Reflecting on her medical history revealed moments that stood out. During Nancy’s 12-month check-up, she showed low hemoglobin levels, indicative of slight anemia. We believed increasing her iron intake would help, following medical advice.
Additionally, she developed a limp that lasted weeks before diagnosis. X-rays and leukemia screenings delivered clear results. Medical advice was to monitor her condition. These instances linger in my mind, prompting questions about missed opportunities for further testing and clarity.
Parental instincts are vital. Even without specific answers, recognizing discomfort is important. Life post-diagnosis transformed irrevocably, filled with uncertainty.
Navigating a New Reality
Since Nancy’s diagnosis, our lives have centered around her medical journey. She’s spent over 70 nights in the hospital within six months. Despite living an hour away from her Norfolk treatment team, we’re on the road constantly for appointments and therapies.
Home life remains challenging, filled with chemotherapy side effects management, fever monitoring, and administering medications. We’re determined to maintain a semblance of normalcy for our family.
Balancing Nancy’s needs with those of her three older sisters poses difficulties. Often, one parent is at home supporting the children, while the other attends medical commitments. We’re committed to staying connected, supporting each other, and building a secure future.
Enduring Together
Cancer’s impact extends beyond the patient. It strains relationships, work, finances, and mental wellness. Nancy’s resilience is inspiring. Amid treatments and surgeries, she still smiles — her strength sustains our family.
Supporting Nancy involves embracing childhood joys — pool activities, arts and crafts, family moments. These simple pleasures are cherished deeply.
Cancer has transformed nearly all aspects of our lives but imparted newfound clarity. Time is precious and we remain hopeful. Our gratitude extends to the medical team, family, friends, and supportive strangers.
We treasure each day with Nancy, fighting alongside her. Updates on her journey are shared on TikTok (@thehomefrontmama). We continue fundraising through GoFundMe to aid in medical expenses. Every expression here is drawn from personal experience.
