Standing on Eternity Beach in St. Lucia, Jaden Slaughter embraced her father, ready for her wedding. The Caribbean waves crashed, and as the music signaled her entrance, she walked towards Malachi, her soon-to-be husband. It was June 5, 2026, a joyful day. Despite the happiness, she couldn’t shake off the electric zaps in her left breast.
After the ceremony, they celebrated under the moonlight on the beach. Jaden danced with her father to “Landslide” by Fleetwood Mac, a song that reminded her of her late mother, who passed from colorectal cancer three years prior. Jaden felt her mom’s presence that night, despite the sense of looming uncertainty.
The Discovery of a Mass
In March, Jaden found a solid, moveable lump in her left breast while trying on a bra. Although it resembled a grape, it felt hard, not like a cyst. Alarmed, she researched breast cancer symptoms, noting that cancerous lumps often feel immovable and irregular. Concerned, she saw her doctor on March 27.
Her doctor initially reassured her, suggesting the mass was not worrisome. However, Jaden requested a breast ultrasound. While waiting for results, she recalled her mother’s late-stage cancer diagnosis, fueling her urgency.
Three weeks later, Jaden received a call. Her 1.5-centimeter mass was classified as probably benign on the BI-RADS scale. Despite this, she continued to experience discomfort and advocated for a biopsy, leading to a referral to a center in Lubbock, Texas.
The timing of her wedding offered a brief respite, but shortly after, the biopsy revealed the mass had grown to 2.8 cm in three months. On June 24, Jaden faced a diagnosis of triple negative invasive ductal carcinoma, a severe form of breast cancer.
Facing Treatment
Jaden felt speechless and grieved what she thought would be the rest of her life. Despite online information suggesting grim outcomes, she started treatment with a powerful chemotherapy known humorously as “Red Devil.” She endured severe side effects, including nausea and brain fog, but has completed four rounds thus far.
In January, she awaits a double mastectomy, followed by up to a year of immunotherapy. Despite the challenging journey, Jaden is grateful for every step that brings her closer to recovery.
The Importance of Advocacy
Jaden’s husband Malachi has proven a vital support throughout. His steadfast presence highlights the value of a strong partner. Advocating for herself has taught Jaden the importance of trusting her instincts and pushing for her health.
Jaden now values life more deeply, appreciating each day as a gift. She faces uncertainties with gratitude, cherishing the support of her loved ones.
Jaden resides in Carlsbad, New Mexico, and shares her experiences on TikTok under the handle @mothur, offering insight into her journey through marriage, cancer, and resilience.
