Adam Silver’s Approach to Caitlin Clark’s Safety

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has faced criticism for what many perceive as a passive stance on the safety concerns surrounding WNBA superstar Caitlin Clark. Instead of confronting the physical treatment Clark has been subjected to on the court, Silver appears to focus more on minimizing the controversy.

During the CNBC Sports Summit in New York, Silver had the chance to push for accountability regarding Clark’s treatment. However, he claimed the controversy is more politically driven rather than due to actions on the court.

“I’ve come to know Caitlin really well. She’s an incredible player and also an incredible person. And she wants to focus on being the best player she can. She has become a bit of a political football in this country, and I think it’s incredibly unfair to her. … It’s become political ping-pong with her,” Silver stated.

Controversy in Perspective

Supporters of Clark believe Silver has missed the key issue. Instead of addressing the ongoing hard fouls and physical confrontations Clark faces, Silver redirected attention to the controversy itself rather than the incidents sparking criticism.

Silver pointed out, “Ultimately, the issues around Caitlin Clark are not largely about officiating, and that particular incident is not about whether a foul should have been called at the time.” This view contrasts with the experiences of Clark’s fans who have witnessed repeated aggressive play against her.

Involvement and Unanswered Questions

Reports indicate Silver consulted with WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert before the suspension of Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas, following a controversial throat strike. Yet, Silver remained vague when asked about these discussions, responding, “I’m not going to comment on [the Engelbert report], because I don’t think it’s fair to Caitlin, and to Cathy Engelbert either.”

Improving Officiating in the WNBA

While Silver recognized the need for better officiating, saying, “Do we need to improve WNBA officiating? No doubt about it,” he quickly shifted focus from the larger issues regarding Clark’s treatment.
