Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delivered a defiant speech in the early morning hours following the closure of polls, emphasizing the need for a right-wing, national government. Addressing supporters in Jerusalem, Netanyahu urged the formation of a strong Likud-led government, despite the party’s current shortfall of the 61 seats needed for a majority in the 120-seat Knesset.
Netanyahu, speaking after 3 a.m. local time, also highlighted the ongoing U.S.-Israeli tensions with Iran. He described the situation as a historical opportunity, alongside U.S. President Donald Trump, to eliminate what he termed as Iran’s existential threat.
Allegations of Election Misinformation
Netanyahu faced accusations of spreading misinformation through his X account with posts deemed as anti-Arab. Disinformation experts criticized an image reportedly generated by AI, which showed long lines of Muslim voters at polling stations, urging emergency responses from Likud voters. Achiya Schatz, a misinformation expert, pointed out the inaccuracies but NBC News was unable to authenticate the image.
Netanyahu’s social media campaign has been described as fear-mongering concerning Israel’s future and Arab voter participation.
Opposition Claims and Preliminary Results
Yair Golan, leader of the Democrats Party, declared that voters had dismissed Netanyahu’s government, calling for a new government of change. Golan emphasized his party’s commitment to ensuring such a government is established, reflecting the desires of their significant supporter base.
The Central Elections Committee released initial results showing Likud leading with 26.50% of the votes with Eisenkot’s bloc close behind at 19.32%. These preliminary figures are subject to change as the vote counting continues.
Arab Parties See a Turnout Win
The Joint List, an alliance of Arab parties, celebrated high voter turnout among Palestinian citizens of Israel, viewing this as a chance to impact the formation of Netanyahu’s coalition. Despite the increased participation, rival Eisenkot remained cautious about collaborating with Arab parties, complicating coalition prospects.
High Voter Turnout
Israel’s latest election saw voter turnout reach 77.7%, the highest since 1999. This heightened engagement reflects the public’s interest in a potentially transformative political outcome. Official election results will be available within eight days, with the potential for protracted coalition negotiations.
Amid these dynamics, Netanyahu accentuated his strong ties with Donald Trump during the campaign. His support base focuses on ongoing conflict with Iran and a firm stance against Palestinian movements. Conversely, opposition followers fear Netanyahu’s policies may further alienate Israel from the global community.
