The New England Patriots secured their first victory of the season on Sunday. Despite the win, head coach Mike Vrabel faced questions from reporters regarding his quarterback, Drake Maye, which led to a tense exchange during the post-game press conference.
After the Patriots defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers with a score of 20-3, Boston Globe reporter Ben Volin queried Vrabel about his concerns over Maye’s performance in the initial two weeks. Vrabel was quick to deflect, emphasizing that he wouldn’t allow such inquiries to dampen the victory. Similarly, reporter Greg Bedard questioned Maye’s struggles, but Vrabel insisted on focusing on the positives after their win.
Drake Maye’s recent performances have not mirrored his previous success. Last season, he played a pivotal role in leading the Patriots to the Super Bowl. However, in the game against Pittsburgh, Maye completed just 14 of 22 passes for 208 yards, with no touchdowns and one interception. Although he managed a significant 63-yard pass to receiver Romeo Doubs, the team’s offense was not consistent, scoring only 13 offensive points. The Patriots’ defense, however, was formidable, restricting Aaron Rodgers and the Steelers to just 3 points and 235 yards in total.
The match saw rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson scoring the Patriots’ sole offensive touchdown with a 39-yard run in the first quarter. Later, a crucial play by Christian Barmore led to a strip-sack of Rodgers, allowing Elijah Ponder to return the fumble 19 yards for a touchdown.
Despite the decisive win, Maye’s performance remained under scrutiny. In the season opener against the Seattle Seahawks, Maye threw three interceptions in the fourth quarter, causing the Patriots to squander a 10-point lead and lose 13-10. His final interception occurred in the end zone, ending their chance for a game-tying drive.
Throughout the first two games, Maye has thrown four interceptions compared to just one touchdown. This is a stark contrast to his 2025 season, where he amassed 4,394 yards and 31 touchdowns, finishing as an NFL MVP runner-up.
While Coach Vrabel relished the recent victory, given the team’s previous defeat against Seattle, he understands the new season’s challenges. The Patriots are observing the young quarterback’s difficulties as he strives to reach the form he displayed last year. Consequently, the questions about his performance will persist until Maye can demonstrate improvement on the field.
