The New England Patriots nearly secured a season-opening victory against the Seattle Seahawks, but they ultimately fell short with a 13-10 loss in the NFL’s first game of the season.
In the fourth quarter, Patriots quarterback Drake Maye led a drive that had the potential to secure a win with a touchdown or tie the game with a field goal to force overtime. Unfortunately, his pass aimed at the end zone was intercepted, sealing the Patriots’ fate.
“I lost patience, and it cost us. Decisions I made cost us the game,” Maye openly admitted to reporters, taking full responsibility for the outcome. “It’s a long season, but you can’t have mistakes like that. I need to get back to work because that wasn’t my usual standard of play.”
The interception that dashed the Patriots’ hopes occurred with just 21 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Maye attempted to connect with a teammate in the end zone corner, but Seahawks’ defender Josh Jobe intercepted the pass, securing victory for Seattle.
Throughout the game, Maye completed 23 of his 33 pass attempts, amassing 178 yards and one touchdown to rookie Eli Raridon. However, he also suffered three interceptions, demonstrating the Seahawks’ defensive strength.
The game presented a winnable opportunity for the Patriots, given that the Seahawks lost starting quarterback Sam Darnold early in the first quarter due to an injury. Darnold’s exit led to backup Drew Lock stepping in as his replacement.
Initial reports suggest that Darnold’s injury is not severe, though no official return date has been announced by the team.
As for the Patriots, they need to regroup and address the issues highlighted in their performance. Their next game is scheduled against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, Sept. 20, featuring a quarterback face-off between Maye and the seasoned Aaron Rodgers.
