New York Knicks Clinch Their First NBA Title Since 1973

The New York Knicks have captured the franchise’s first NBA championship since 1973 by defeating the San Antonio Spurs in the 2026 NBA Finals.

During the 2026 ESPYS on Wednesday night, the Knicks dominated with five awards honoring their impressive postseason success. Jalen Brunson, the Finals MVP, earned three of these awards himself: Best NBA Player, Best Championship Performance, and Best Athlete — Men’s Sports. Brunson showcased remarkable skill, averaging 32.6 points per game in the NBA Finals and achieving 45 points in the Knicks’ decisive Game 5 win.

Further highlighting basketball achievements, OG Anunoby secured the Best Play award. Anunoby contributed significantly by helping overcome a massive 29-point deficit against the Spurs in Game 4 of the NBA Finals. His game-winning tip-in clinched the victory at Madison Square Garden.

The Knicks also celebrated winning the Best Team award.

In his acceptance speech for the Best Championship Performance ESPY, Brunson expressed gratitude, saying, “First and foremost, I want to thank my family for sacrificing everything day in and day out.” He extended his thanks to key figures in the Knicks’ success, including owner Jim Dolan, president Leon Rose, the front office, head coach Mike Brown, and his teammates. “Without them, none of this would be possible. They allow me to be me. I’m forever indebted to them,” he added.
