The New York Knicks are returning to the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999. They aim to win their first championship since 1973. With an 11-game playoff winning streak, fan excitement is building as many root for them to secure the Larry O’Brien Trophy.
Facing them are the San Antonio Spurs, a younger team with less experience. The Spurs recently battled through a seven-game series to eliminate the Oklahoma City Thunder, the reigning champions. This grueling series might give the veteran Knicks an edge. Their performance so far suggests they could be the stronger team.
However, Golden State Warriors’ Draymond Green advises caution against early celebrations. On “The Draymond Green Show,” he expressed skepticism about the Knicks’ path to the Finals. “I double down on this! Just like Becky Hammon said, prove me wrong. Prove me wrong,” he stated.
Getting out of the East has never been a surefire way to winning a championship. What y’all talkin’ about? You get out of the East, you’re just supposed to get out of the East. It’s the [expletive] East,” Green said. “You should be able to get out of the East,” he added.
Green mentioned his happiness for Mike Brown, showing some positive sentiments amidst his critique.
In their journey to the Finals, the Knicks appeared to shift gears late in their initial series against the Atlanta Hawks. They won decisively, closing the series 4-2. Next, they swept the Philadelphia 76ers in four games, a team led by Joel Embiid. The Eastern Conference Finals saw them repeat this feat against Donovan Mitchell, James Harden, and the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Despite these achievements, critics note the Hawks lacked star power. Additionally, the Knicks avoided the No. 2 seed Boston Celtics since Jayson Tatum missed Game 7 versus the 76ers, resulting in a Celtics loss. This situation means the Knicks didn’t have to face either of the top two seeds in their conference on their path to the Finals.
Nonetheless, the Knicks are entering the series against the Spurs with growing momentum and confidence. The Spurs, though young, extended their matchup to a full seven games against OKC.
The NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs will begin at 8:40 p.m. ET on Wednesday, June 3.
