Americans Divided Over Trump’s Policies
A recent poll conducted by Reuters/Ipsos revealed that a significant majority of Americans oppose President Trump’s decision to rename Lake Ontario. In this survey, 63% of respondents opposed the renaming, while 14% supported it. The remaining participants were either undecided or did not answer.
In addition to the renaming issue, 57% of Americans opposed Trump’s proposal to impose higher tariffs on Canadian goods. Only 20% were in favor of these measures.
White House Response
White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers defended the renaming and tariff decisions. She described Canada as a bad neighbor, asserting that it has taken advantage of the United States. Rogers emphasized that President Trump is steadfast in protecting American industries and workers.
“Thanks to the President’s strong leadership, we are putting America back on the map,” Rogers stated.
Trump’s Executive Order and Trade Dispute
Last Thursday, Trump signed an executive order to rename Lake Ontario to ‘Lake America’. This decision came amid a trade dispute with Canada. At the same time, Trump accused Ontario of exploiting American businesses, further intensifying tensions.
The U.S. had imposed a 50% tariff on a range of Canadian goods. In response, Canada implemented its own tariffs, also up to 50%, on American imports.
Public Opinion and Impact
The Reuters/Ipsos poll collected feedback from 1,023 U.S. adults online, with a margin of error of 4 percentage points. This data illustrates the mixed reactions to Trump’s policies and highlights ongoing tensions between the United States and Canada.
