Amy Acton, the Democratic candidate for Ohio governor and former state health director, faced a confrontation with a Republican activist at one of her campaign events in Harrison, Ohio. The activist, carrying a camera, questioned Acton on her refusal to debate her Republican contender, Vivek Ramaswamy.
The incident was captured on video, which shows Acton being shielded by her campaign staff as she walks away from the activist. This has led to increased criticism from Ramaswamy’s supporters, who accuse her of avoiding debates without providing sufficient reasons. As both candidates near the end of their campaigns, the pressure is mounting.
Ramaswamy has contributed $25 million of his own money to his campaign, achieving a fundraising total of $50 million.
At a primary election event in Columbus, Ohio, on May 5, 2026, Dr. Amy Acton celebrated her Democratic nomination. However, during the recent confrontation, her staff repeatedly instructed, “No photos, no videos.” The situation intensified when the staff accidentally jostled the cameraman’s equipment, causing a disturbance.
Acton did not answer the activist’s questions. Earlier, when Ramaswamy agreed to a CNN debate, Acton’s campaign declined the invitation. A spokesperson stated that Acton was focused on engaging with Ohioans, accusing Ramaswamy of spreading untrue claims about her and using AI to misrepresent her personal history.
Ramaswamy, on the other hand, dismissed Acton’s criticisms. He challenged her leadership capacities, pointing out her resignation as Ohio’s health director and her avoidance of voter interaction. He shared these concerns on social media, expressing disappointment that Ohio voters would not hear Acton’s perspective in a debate format.
Having secured the Democratic nomination, Acton is set to compete against Ramaswamy in the general election on November 3. Despite the ongoing debate controversy, her campaign did not comment further when contacted by Fox News Digital.
The political scene in Ohio is tense as both candidates push towards the election, each employing different strategies to connect with voters and address the issues at hand.
