Disturbance at Campaign Stop
The Ohio 2026 governor’s race witnessed a troubling event recently. A registered Republican voter was arrested after an alleged attempt to charge at Democratic candidate Amy Acton during a campaign stop. This incident unfolded amid an already tight race between Acton and Republican Vivek Ramaswamy.
Amy Acton, a physician and former Ohio state health director, is up against Vivek Ramaswamy, endorsed by Trump, in the contest to succeed the term-limited GOP Governor Mike DeWine. While Ohio leaned Democratic in past presidential elections under Barack Obama, it has shifted Republican with Trump winning the state in 2016, 2020, and 2024.
Incident Details at Canfield Fair
During an event at the Canfield Fair near Youngstown, a 38-year-old man named Patrick Havas, pushed through a crowd at a Democratic Party tent while Acton greeted voters. Authorities noted he recorded the confrontation with his cellphone as he knocked over several attendees, including two elderly people on mobility scooters.
Havas, a registered Republican and licensed nurse, carried two handguns and brass knuckles though no weapon was drawn. Ohio State Highway Patrol security promptly intervened. Havas faces disorderly conduct and assault charges and is held at Mahoning County Jail.
In response, Acton’s campaign condemned the violence, emphasizing a commitment to opposing hate and chaos. Ramaswamy’s campaign and other political figures likewise condemned this behavior.
Polling Trends
The Canfield Fair incident adds to an already close race for 2026. Polls since February consistently show Acton and Ramaswamy neck and neck, with leads shifting back and forth.
Recent polling averages indicate Acton leads by 0.3 percentage points as of September 7. This reflects a statistical tie. As of yet, polls have not gauged the impact of the Canfield Fair event on voter preferences.
Prediction Market Insights
Prediction markets present a slightly different picture than polls. Initially, Ramaswamy held a favorable edge, but this shifted with Acton gaining a statistical lead. At present, prediction markets like Kalshi and Polymarket show Acton with a mid-to-high single-digit advantage.
The Canfield Fair incident appears to have reinforced existing trends rather than causing abrupt shifts, according to recent prediction market pricing.
What’s Ahead
The race remains exceptionally tight, with prediction markets and polls differing on the margin of Acton’s advantage. Acton has led in fundraising, but Ramaswamy has significant cash reserves for his campaign.
Both candidates continue to push for their place as the next Ohio governor, while potential impacts of recent events on voter sentiment continue to unfold.
