College football often sees powerhouses maintain dominance. Programs lacking a strong history find it tough to reach the top. Last year, Indiana Hoosiers broke the mold by claiming their first national championship. This season, speculation suggests another newcomer might ascend to the throne.
The Athletic conducted a poll among 18 coaches regarding prospective champions. The consensus favors Dan Lanning’s Oregon Ducks. Six coaches picked Oregon, while no other team received more than three votes. Bruce Feldman of The Athletic noted one coach abstained, believing his own team could secure the title.
An ACC offensive analyst remarked, “I think this is the most wide-open race we’ve had in college football in such a long time. I’ll say Oregon. Dan Lanning has continued to get better and better, and this is the year he cracks through.” The confidence in Oregon stems largely from quarterback Dante Moore.
Moore garnered nine out of 18 votes as the favorite for the Heisman Trophy. No other candidate received more than four votes. A Big 12 team’s general manager commented, “I’ll say Moore because he’s gonna have a lot of marquee games.” Should Moore meet expectations and become a formidable Heisman contender, Oregon stands a strong chance of clinching their inaugural title.
Oregon often enters the national conversation annually, yet setbacks occur. Last year, their clash with Indiana in the College Football Playoff halted progress. Moore’s initial pass was intercepted, converted for a touchdown. Indiana triumphed with a 56-22 victory. This season, insiders predict a different narrative for Oregon.
