Penn State Student Fatally Shot in Philadelphia During Alleged Robbery Attempt
A manhunt is in progress following the fatal shooting of a Pennsylvania State University student during a suspected robbery attempt. The incident occurred early Saturday morning in Philadelphia.
Philadelphia Police reported that Billy Schmidt, aged 22, was shot around 1:30 a.m., a short distance from his residence. Upon arrival, officers discovered him with a chest gunshot wound. He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead at 1:47 a.m.
Bill Schmidt, the victim’s father, recounted to ABC7 that his son had been returning from a bar. He had been watching the NBA Finals with friends prior to the shooting. Security footage shows Billy Schmidt asking for his phone before gunfire ensued. The video depicts one individual throwing a cellphone while another runs, with Billy Schmidt in pursuit, leading to the fatal shot.
Billy was nearing his graduation at Penn State University, planned for December. His father expressed sorrow, describing Billy as a compassionate person who had never caused harm. He expressed disbelief over the circumstances leading to his son’s death.
“He was a really good person who cared about everybody and never hurt or bothered a soul, never bothered anyone and for him to get shot like that is a travesty,” said Bill Schmidt. “I’m shocked when they stole his phone that he chased them.”
Though police have yet to make an arrest related to the incident, community members have called for anyone with useful information to come forward. One neighbor emphasized the need for justice, appealing to those with details about the suspects.
“I want justice, I want the kid that shot Billy to be found,” a neighbor stated. “If anyone’s out there that recognizes anything… they seem young to me. If anyone has any information or recognizes anything about the kids, I would love for them to come forward.”
Anna Schmidt, Billy’s sister, shared sentiments in a GoFundMe campaign. She highlighted her brother as a well-loved figure in their community. The campaign has successfully raised over $48,000 in his memory.
