A new cancer vaccine developed by Moderna and Merck is raising hopes for a transformative advancement in medicine. Recently, the companies announced that their Phase 3 INTerpath-001 trial met its primary endpoint of recurrence-free survival and a secondary endpoint of distant metastasis-free survival in patients with high-risk melanoma. This trial involves tumors that have been surgically removed.
What Is Intismeran Autogene?
The treatment under study, intismeran autogene, is a personalized mRNA therapy tailored to each patient’s tumor. It is given alongside Merck’s immunotherapy, Keytruda. Moderna’s spokesperson highlighted that the results represent the first positive Phase 3 outcome for both an individualized neoantigen therapy and an mRNA-based cancer therapy. Data from this trial will be presented at an international medical conference soon.
Pending regulatory feedback, Moderna has indicated that intismeran could become available as early as next year. While this vaccine has shown positive results in melanoma, both companies are researching its efficacy in other cancers such as non-small cell lung cancer, bladder cancer, and kidney cancer.
