At the Aspen Institute’s Ideas Festival in Aspen, Colorado, billionaire Peter Thiel addressed the audience with concerns about current political shifts, notably within the Democratic Party. He warned that democratic socialists are exerting more influence, suggesting changes that impact the party’s direction.
Thiel commented on what he perceives as cultural, technological, and economic stagnation, describing it as destabilizing over time. He linked these experiences to political shifts, likening them to reactions to dissatisfaction within both major political parties in the United States.
“My generation was the first one where things felt stuck,” explained Thiel. “I think millennials are doing less well than their boomer parents, and Gen Z feels this more intensely.”
Drawing comparisons to Republican dynamics, Thiel predicted a democratic socialist takeover within the Democratic Party, urging liberal Democrats to take this trend seriously. He emphasized this as a response to widespread frustration with current stagnation.
The remarks followed the success of democratic socialist candidates endorsed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani in recent New York primaries. This political momentum extended to Colorado, where candidate Melat Kiros won in the 1st Congressional District, ousting a long-term incumbent.
Thiel, a known supporter of Republican candidates, emphasized the importance of embracing artificial intelligence (AI) for U.S. progress. He critiqued attempts to slow down or halt AI advancements, viewing such actions as harmful to addressing systemic economic issues.
“If we just have this economic stagnation, that’s the road toward total catastrophe,” Thiel stated. “I’m extremely alarmed about a tendency to slow down AI because the alternative is zero-sum, Malthusian politics. People get angrier and angrier. It’s not going to work.”
