Physician Shortage Strains Healthcare in Southeastern North Carolina

Last February, an incident at a rural middle school highlighted the issue. A child experienced a severe allergic reaction, despite having no prior history. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded quickly and began transporting the child to a large medical center in Durham, approximately 30 minutes away. During the journey, the child’s vital signs deteriorated.

Faced with a critical decision, paramedics made the choice to divert to Roxboro’s closest hospital, which was only a few minutes away.

Upon arrival at Roxboro’s emergency department, the child received multiple medications and supportive measures to stabilize her condition. The swift decision by paramedics and available treatments were instrumental in saving her life.
