The release of body camera footage by the Los Angeles Police Department on Friday has drawn significant attention and criticism globally. The footage reveals an officer shooting a pet dog, which has intensified discussions on the use of force by law enforcement.
Jameson, a two-year-old golden Saint Berdoodle, was shot and killed last Saturday. This occurred outside an apartment where officers had responded to a report of a woman screaming. The department later disclosed that the woman, Marie Marseille, was celebrating the New York Knicks’ victory in the N.B.A. championship.
The video, a compilation of recordings from the officers’ body cameras, depicts them approaching the apartment. They had been called by a neighbor who reported hearing persistent screams of “Oh, my god” for 20 minutes. This prompted a wellness check from the police, as noted in a 911 call included in the released footage.
As shown in the video, the officers stood beside the apartment door, knocked, and identified themselves as police. The timestamp indicates it was nearly 9 p.m. A woman, not named in the video, opened the door, accompanied by a barking gray dog wearing a blue shirt. The officers requested her to secure the dog while one officer drew a handgun.
