Controversial Meeting Disruption
On Tuesday afternoon, James Fischback, a former Florida gubernatorial candidate and controversial political figure, was forcibly removed from a Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners meeting. Fischback protested the county’s decision to expand investment in Israel-backed bonds.
He challenged commissioners with sharp questions: “Do you serve the people of Hialeah, or of Haifa? Do you serve the people of Aventura, or of Tel Aviv? Do you serve the people of South Miami, or of Jerusalem?” Fischback emphasized the need for funds to be invested locally in Miami-Dade County, before being escorted from the room by officers.
Investment Policy Changes Fuel Debate
This confrontation follows the county’s earlier decision to increase its investment cap in Israel from 3% to 5% of its portfolio. This adjustment permits an investment range between $400 million and $450 million. Critics like Fischback oppose using public funds for investments in Israel, citing ongoing political divisions in the U.S. due to the conflict in Gaza.
Fischback has long been vocal about his stance against U.S.-Israel ties, using moments like the meeting to amplify his viewpoint.
Previous Controversial Remarks
Fischback, a Republican candidate known for his bold statements, attracted national attention during his gubernatorial campaign. Among 11 GOP candidates aiming to succeed outgoing Gov. Ron DeSantis, he secured 10.4% of the vote in the August 18 primary. Fischback’s public appearances have often ignited controversy.
In one instance, Fischback repeatedly referred to Rep. Byron Donalds, the frontrunner and eventual nominee, as a “slave,” accusing him of allegiance to donors and corporate interests.
Donalds, who received support from President Donald Trump, is running for Florida governor. Fischback targeted him in confrontational exchanges, further inflaming the situation.
Public Opposition to Investment Changes
Other public members voiced concerns over the portfolio change, disappointed by the county’s decision amidst a politically charged atmosphere. A woman named Ivar Fandel expressed her discontent, wearing a “let Gaza live” shirt as she addressed the issue.
Fandel pointed out that item 5B exists within a budget crisis and ongoing violence against Palestinians in Gaza.
Fischback’s Campaign and Controversies
Throughout his campaign, Fischback emphasized his refusal to accept contributions from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). He pledged to divest from Israel-backed bonds.
He criticized Florida’s policy allowing taxpayer funds for foreign government bonds, with Israel as the exception. Fischback argued in an interview with the American Conservative against lending taxpayer money to any foreign government.
Fischback expressed particular disdain for candidates with perceived singular allegiance to Israel, calling such allegiance “preposterous.” He criticized figures like Randy Fine and others for prioritizing Israel’s interests in U.S. politics.
Despite these controversies, Fischback continues to make headlines with his outspoken views. His rhetoric stirs debate over foreign investment and national allegiance.
