Political Tensions Rise Over Alaska Senate Ballot Issue
A political clash is escalating in Alaska over a seemingly unusual issue that could influence control of Congress. The question at the center is how many individuals named Dan Sullivan can appear on the state’s Senate ballot this November.
Ballot Concerns
Dan J. Sullivan, formerly a teacher, is striving to maintain his position on the ballot. He aims to challenge Senator Dan S. Sullivan of Alaska, a Republican in his second term. On Friday, an elections official took steps to disqualify Dan J. Sullivan.
Both Democrats and Republicans regard Dan J. Sullivan’s candidacy as more than a sideshow. Despite expectations that Dan J. Sullivan will not mount a strong campaign, Republicans fear voter confusion. Some may mistakenly vote for him, potentially benefiting the Democratic candidate, former Representative Mary Peltola, in a race crucial for Senate control.
Investigation Initiated
Lt. Gov. Nancy Dahlstrom of Alaska, a Republican, announced on Monday an investigation into Dan J. Sullivan’s candidacy. Her office cited “credible allegations” of coordination between him and Ms. Peltola, purportedly to confuse voters.
On Wednesday, top elections official Carol Beecher, a Republican and overseen by the lieutenant governor, sent a letter to Dan J. Sullivan. The letter suggested he might be ineligible to run, referencing a deadline to submit documents to support his eligibility.
Responses from Candidates
Both Dan J. Sullivan and Ms. Peltola have denied any coordination on his campaign.
Dan J. Sullivan remarked in a statement that Lt. Gov. Dahlstrom’s actions created a perception of the state government protecting an incumbent senator. Such actions, he suggested, obstruct fair competition at the ballot box.
