Politics and Tulsi Gabbard’s Resignation Amid Husband’s Cancer Battle
Tulsi Gabbard, Director of National Intelligence, has resigned following her husband’s diagnosis with a rare bone cancer. This decision sparked discussions about the political implications of her departure. Media and Democratic officials, including key figures like Nira Tanden and Adam Schiff, face criticism for allegedly politicizing her decision to step down during a personal crisis.
Gabbard shared on social media that her husband, Abraham Williams, underwent nearly seven hours of surgery to remove a sacral chordoma, a rare type of bone tumor. She stated, “The surgery to remove bone and surrounding tissue lasted almost seven hours and was successful. He had a rough night and is in a lot of pain but is finally home resting.” This announcement marked the first public acknowledgment of the precise diagnosis.
The former Congresswoman declared her forthcoming resignation to aid her husband as he fights this rare cancer. Fox News Digital first reported her decision to step down at the end of June 2026. Gabbard communicated her decision to President Donald Trump in May, highlighting the necessity of her presence at home during this time.
“At this time, I must step away from public service to be by his side and fully support him through this battle,” Gabbard stated in her resignation letter. “Abraham has been my rock throughout our eleven years of marriage.”
Donald Trump announced Bill Pulte as acting director of national intelligence to fill the position. Pulte will continue to serve as Federal Housing Finance Agency chief and Chairman of Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac. Trump expressed his understanding and support of Gabbard’s decision, noting her desire “rightfully” to aid her husband during this difficult period. “Tulsi has done an incredible job, and we will miss her,” he wrote.
A sacral chordoma is a rare cancerous tumor that grows slowly on the sacrum, a triangular bone at the spine’s base. Only a few hundred cases are diagnosed annually, making it an unusual and challenging condition to tackle. The National Cancer Institute provides details on its prevalence and characteristics.
Tulsi Gabbard, a US Army Reserve officer and combat veteran, enjoyed a long career in Congress. She made significant impacts over the last year and a half as Director of National Intelligence. Her shift from Democrat to Republican signifies her notable political journey.
