Pontoon Boat Accident Near Alcatraz Island Results in One Death and Three Missing
Tragedy struck near San Francisco’s Alcatraz Island on Tuesday when a pontoon boat capsized and sank, resulting in the death of one person and leaving three others missing, according to authorities.
The incident occurred during a memorial service that involved mostly family members. Sixteen people were successfully rescued from the water.
San Francisco Fire Chief Dean Crispen reported that upon arriving at the scene, emergency crews found a three-deck pontoon vessel almost fully submerged, with its motor still running and leaking fuel.
Regrettably, the individual who died was rescued alive from the frigid waters but later succumbed. Additionally, a dog onboard lost its life.
Three individuals who fell from the boat suffered injuries and are currently receiving treatment at a hospital.
Authorities are conducting a search for the missing individuals in open water on the western side of the Golden Gate Bridge. This continuous effort involves divers, helicopters, and boats, and is expected to persist throughout the night.
The initial count of missing individuals was updated from two to three after witness reports. “We are currently in full rescue mode,” Crispen stated.
On Tuesday evening, the U.S. Coast Guard shared on X that the search and rescue efforts remain “ongoing” and promised further updates as more details become available.
