On May 25, Pope Leo XIV will release his first encyclical, focusing on the protection of human dignity in the age of Artificial Intelligence (AI). This initiative marks a significant step by the Vatican to address AI’s impact on humanity. Anthropic, a company prioritizing AI safety, plays a crucial role, with its co-founder Christopher Olah attending the event. Anthropic’s standpoint on AI safety contrasts with recent U.S. policies.
In February, the U.S. government, led by the Trump administration, imposed restrictions on Anthropic’s AI technology. This decision came after Anthropic refused to allow the U.S. military unrestricted use of its AI. Consequently, a legal battle ensued, with Anthropic accusing the administration of unlawful retaliation.
The encyclical, titled Magnifica Humanitas (Magnificent Humanity), represents a significant gathering. Unlike typical Vatican presentations, this launch in the main Vatican auditorium will feature top cardinals and lay speakers. Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández and Cardinal Michael Czerny will be central figures, accompanied by theologians and Olah. Cardinal Pietro Parolin will provide concluding remarks, and Pope Leo XIV will deliver a speech and blessing.
Pope Leo XIV finalized Magnifica Humanitas on May 15, coinciding with the 135th anniversary of Pope Leo XIII’s seminal encyclical, “Rerum Novarum.” This document laid the groundwork for modern Catholic social teaching, addressing labor rights in the Industrial Revolution. Pope Leo XIV sees parallels between the AI revolution and that earlier era, emphasizing AI’s ethical challenges within the church’s social teaching framework.
Anthropic, founded by Dario Amodei after departing OpenAI, positions itself at the forefront of AI safety. The company aims for safe development of artificial general intelligence, vying with OpenAI and other tech firms. It highlights the ongoing AI race, warning of potential misuse by authoritarian regimes. Anthropic stresses the need for democratic nations to guide AI advancement and regulate its proliferation.
Anthropic’s valuation reached $380 billion earlier this year, placing it alongside major AI entities like OpenAI and SpaceX, recently merged with xAI, led by Elon Musk.
