Pope Leo XIV recently visited the Italian town of Sant’Angelo Lodigiano, the birthplace of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini, the first American saint and patron of immigrants. This visit highlighted Leo’s dedication to immigration issues at the forefront of his papacy. Cabrini is revered for her significant contributions to supporting migrants, and Leo calls upon Catholics to follow her example during these times of global migration challenges.
Leo’s emphasis on migration has sparked tensions with former U.S. President Donald Trump, leading to notable public disagreements. He underscores the importance of welcoming immigrants, drawing parallels with Pope Francis who prioritized migrant welfare during his tenure as pope. Leo questioned, “What could be more relevant today than a missionary charism dedicated to serving migrants?” during a prayer service at Sant’Angelo Lodigiano.
Earlier, Leo embarked on a journey to the Canary Islands, a primary destination for African migrants. There, he met with migrants and called for the creation of safer and legal paths for migration. He emphasized treating migrants as individuals rather than mere statistics.
Despite criticism from Trump on Leo’s immigration stance, the pope insists that his advocacy arises from the church’s doctrines on human dignity and peace, rather than political motives. This sentiment has fueled a complex dynamic between the Vatican and U.S. political leaders such as Marco Rubio, who are engaged in discussions with Vatican officials.
Leo’s commitment extends beyond public speeches. Plans have been set for him to visit Lampedusa, an island symbolizing Europe’s migrant challenges, on July 4. This visit aligns with his American heritage and underscores his enduring focus on migration. Leo remains undeterred in advocating for vulnerable people, consistently drawing inspiration from figures like Cabrini whose legacy he continues to uphold.
