Pope Leo XIV’s Focus on Migration Amid His Emerging Papacy

Pope Leo XIV recently visited the Italian town of Sant’Angelo Lodigiano, the birthplace of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini, the first American saint and patron of immigrants. This visit highlighted Leo’s dedication to immigration issues at the forefront of his papacy. Cabrini is revered for her significant contributions to supporting migrants, and Leo calls upon Catholics to follow her example during these times of global migration challenges.

Leo’s emphasis on migration has sparked tensions with former U.S. President Donald Trump, leading to notable public disagreements. Earlier, Leo embarked on a journey to the Canary Islands, a primary destination for African migrants. There, he met with migrants and called for the creation of safer and legal paths for migration. He emphasized treating migrants as individuals rather than mere statistics.

Despite criticism from Trump on Leo’s immigration stance, the pope insists that his advocacy arises from the church’s doctrines on human dignity and peace, rather than political motives.
