Pope Leo XIV will embark on a significant journey to Latin America from November 6 to 17. The Vatican has provided the full itinerary for his travels through Peru, Uruguay, and Argentina.
Returning to Roots in Peru
The visit is a homecoming for Pope Leo XIV, as he spent 20 years as a priest and bishop in Peru. He holds Peruvian citizenship, alongside his American roots. During his visit, he will retrace familiar paths in Chiclayo, celebrating Mass and revisiting places where he established meaningful connections.
The Pampas de Pimentel will host a Mass expected to attract a million attendees. He will also visit a chapel dedicated to St. Oscar Romero, a figure admired for his advocacy for the oppressed. Leo’s schedule includes meeting grassroots groups in Cusco and celebrating Mass in key locations that hold cultural and historical significance to Peru’s Indigenous population.
Uruguay: A Stop Steeped in Tradition
The trip begins in Uruguay, a country known for its secular character. Christmas, for instance, is officially recognized as Family Day, and Holy Week as Tourism Week. Leo will visit a parish in Casavalle, an area challenged by issues like gang violence and drug trafficking. His presence will coincide with a national feast day, celebrating the patron saint, Our Lady of the Thirty-Three.
Historical Visit to Argentina
Next, Pope Leo XIV will travel to Argentina. This visit is notable because his predecessor, Pope Francis, never returned to Argentina after becoming Pope. In Argentina, Leo intends to engage with government leaders, including President Javier Milei, who has implemented austerity measures criticized by the Church.
During his time in Buenos Aires, Leo will honor the tradition of celebrating Mass, marking locations significant in Catholic history. This includes the Monumento de los Españoles where previous papal masses were led. Importantly, the visit will address Milesi’s economic reforms, which have sparked controversy over their impact on the disadvantaged.
In all, Leo XIV’s journey entails more than 31,000 kilometers of travel, demonstrating his commitment to connecting with diverse communities in these countries.
