Dr. Marc Siegel Discusses GLP-1 Study
Dr. Marc Siegel, Fox News senior medical analyst, recently analyzed a study from the University of California San Diego. This study examined the effects of GLP-1 weight loss medications on biological aging. The findings suggest potential cardiovascular and neurological benefits. Additionally, Siegel pointed out some digestive and thyroid-related side effects.
Brain Condition Linked to GLP-1 Medications
Research warns of a rare, potentially life-threatening brain condition associated with GLP-1 medications. The condition, Wernicke encephalopathy, results from a severe vitamin B1 deficiency. Fifteen cases were identified among users of GLP-1 receptor agonists, such as semaglutide and tirzepatide, sold as Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound.
The study utilized data from the FDA’s Adverse Event Reporting System and medical literature. It noted gastrointestinal symptoms and nutritional issues like weight loss, vomiting, and malnutrition. However, researchers emphasized the study doesn’t confirm these medications cause Wernicke encephalopathy.
Role of Vitamin B1 in Brain Function
Vitamin B1 is crucial for proper brain function. Severe deficiency can lead to confusion, balance problems, and vision changes. Untreated, it may cause permanent neurological damage or death.
Expert Perspectives on GLP-1 Medications
Chicago-based clinician Karthik Achari highlighted the rarity of Wernicke encephalopathy, noting only 15 cases out of millions of users. He explained that GLP-1 medications suppress appetite and promote nausea, upping the risk of vitamin B1 deficiency.
Nutritionist Erin Palinski-Wade added that reduced appetite could lead to a lack of essential nutrients like protein, fiber, and fluids. Persistent nausea and vomiting may also increase dehydration and kidney issues. She urged attention to severe side effects and recommended seeking medical advice if symptoms persist beyond 24 hours.
Need for Further Research
The study’s reliance on FDA reports limits the ability to conclusively link GLP-1 medications to Wernicke encephalopathy. Both researchers and experts recommend further investigation and caution against discontinuing prescribed medications based solely on this study.
Novo Nordisk, Eli Lilly, and the study researchers were contacted by Fox News Digital for comments.
