Power Struggle Unfolds Between Senegal’s Young Leaders
In a notable political upheaval, Senegal witnessed an unexpected turn in its leadership dynamics. Two young leaders, Ousmane Sonko and Bassirou Diomaye Faye, once united in their vision, have found themselves in opposition.
Historic Rise to Power
Ousmane Sonko, a charismatic activist with significant public support, was initially barred from the 2024 presidential race due to a conviction for defaming a government official. His ally, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, seized the moment and won the presidency, becoming Senegal’s youngest leader at 44. Recognizing Sonko’s influence and contribution, Faye appointed him as prime minister.
The Rift Emerges
Recently, the political alliance between Sonko and Faye has deteriorated dramatically. Two weeks ago, after prolonged tensions, Faye fired Sonko from the prime minister’s role. This shake-up has exposed deep disagreements between the two on several fronts.
Party Leadership Contest
The internal conflict is set to intensify with the upcoming party leadership election this Saturday. This contest will reveal which leader offers more influence. Sonko holds the position of the party’s president, while Faye serves as its honorary president.
Accusations and Disagreements
Sonko, now 51, accuses Faye, 46, of distancing from their party’s core principles, such as combating corruption and challenging the elite. Conversely, Faye claims that the party has developed a personality cult around Sonko, overshadowing its original values.
Among their disagreements is the issue of managing Senegal’s significant debt. However, their main point of contention seems to revolve around who should be the candidate in the 2029 presidential election.
