In an ambitious plan, President Donald Trump has disclosed intentions to transform his proposed 250-foot triumphal arch in Washington, D.C., into a military complex. This announcement was made on Truth Social.
“At the strong request of the United States Military, and for National Security purposes, I have agreed to convert the magnificent Triumphal Arch… into a top grade Military Complex/Triumphal Arch,” Trump wrote.
The structure, envisioned to stand near the National Mall, will feature areas for military snipers and substantial amounts of weaponry. The arch is also planned to house and store large numbers of drones. Snipers and ammunition will be positioned on both the roof and plaza areas.
The arch’s construction, planned between Arlington National Cemetery and the Lincoln Memorial, is facing opposition. More than 100,000 comments have been submitted to the National Park Service during its review process. Some argue the arch, twice the height of the Lincoln Memorial, would desecrate the historic grounds of Arlington National Cemetery.
U.S. District Court Judge Tanya Chutkin issued an order requiring the government to provide the court with 48 hours’ notice before any activity on Memorial Circle. Construction or demolition before final authorization from the National Park Service would violate the court’s directive.
A group consisting of Vietnam War veterans and an architectural historian initiated legal action against the arch’s construction. They argue the president lacks the authority to proceed without congressional approval. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum shared plans on social media to begin construction within two weeks, though final approval is still pending from the National Capital Planning Commission and other federal entities.
Trump’s statement on Truth Social emphasized the global uniqueness of the proposed structure. He noted, “Washington, D.C., IS THE ONLY ONE IN THE WORLD THAT DOES NOT HAVE A TRIUMPHAL ARCH, but it will now and, by far, the greatest of them all!”
