Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have returned to the UK, but they will face no change in their royal roles. Buckingham Palace has made it clear that the couple will not resume official duties, affirming their status remains the same since stepping back as working royals in 2020.
Clarification from Buckingham Palace
A letter sent on behalf of King Charles III reiterates the couple stepped down from representative duties for The Sovereign. They are no longer working members of the Royal Family. The letter emphasizes their status is different from state and royal duties, allowing for financial independence and privacy.
Stay in the UK
Prince Harry and Meghan have relocated to the UK with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. Despite the move, the Palace confirmed their royal status remains unchanged. The letter further highlights their titles as His and Her Royal Highness remain in abeyance, reflecting their position akin to private citizens.
Sent by the Lord Chamberlain, the letter clarifies the couple will continue using their titles privately and their charitable work is independent and private.
Children’s Education and Living Arrangements
The children’s education will take place in British schools. The family plans to reside in a private, non-royal residence outside London, without disclosing the specific location.
Expert Opinions
Royal expert Hilary Fordwich explains Harry and Meghan will not regain official royal roles. There was no agreement for a ‘half-in, half-out’ arrangement, and their previous plan with Queen Elizabeth II is not in effect.
Their return is seen as a personal decision. Former butler to King Charles III, Grant Harrold, suggests Harry’s desire to spend more time with his father could be influencing factors.
