Prince Harry is set to return to his home in Britain. He will be accompanied by his wife Meghan and their children for an extended stay. This move might help mend the rift with the royal family. The announcement arrives six years after the couple decided to cease their active royal duties and moved to the United States. This decision had deepened the gap between Harry and his father, King Charles III, and his older brother, Prince William.
The reasons for their return remain unclear as Harry declined to comment on the move to The Associated Press during a recent event. However, the 41-year-old prince, fifth in line to the throne, has shown interest in reconciliation. This interest is linked to spending more time with his father, who is undergoing treatment for an undisclosed type of cancer. While details of their return are vague, the couple has reportedly enrolled their children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, in British schools starting in September, according to someone close to the Sussexes.
Key Points About the Sussexes’ Return
Not Resuming Royal Duties
The family will reside in a private residence outside London, not in a royal property. They will retain their home in Montecito, California, and their vacation property in Costa Terra, Portugal. Despite returning, the couple will not resume their roles as active royals. Their livelihoods now rely on lucrative contracts with Netflix, Spotify, and other ventures. Meghan will manage her company, As Ever, which sells high-priced jams, teas, and wines from the UK. Meanwhile, Harry will dedicate more time to his UK-based charitable organizations, as mentioned by someone familiar with the Sussexes.
“Maybe Meghan is sacrificing for the team here because I’m not sure her lifelong dream is to live in the UK again,”
said Jennie Bond, a former BBC royal correspondent, to Sky News.
The King’s Awareness of the Move
Harry has made sporadic visits to the UK since relocating. These visits partly focused on pursuing lawsuits against UK tabloids with mixed outcomes and unsuccessfully challenging the government’s decision to revoke his security escort. He and Meghan, along with their children, visited King Charles and Queen Camilla last month at Highgrove House. This was the first meeting between the children and their grandfather since Queen Elizabeth II’s platinum jubilee in 2022. However, the king was only made aware of their relocation plans on Sunday, according to British media reports.
“If I were the king, I’d be thinking, ‘Wait a minute, you came for tea, we talked, and you didn’t even mention this?’”
Bond remarked, calling it “odd.” Buckingham Palace follows a policy of not commenting on non-active members of the royal family.
Mending Family Bonds
Harry has made gestures to reconcile with his family. A thawing relationship with Charles has been noticed recently. Harry expressed to the BBC a desire to reconcile with his family. He acknowledged the need to stop fighting, especially considering his father’s condition. However, repairing ties, particularly with his brother William, may prove challenging.
The couple’s ties with the Crown were strained after an interview with Oprah Winfrey and a Netflix series revealed grievances about the palace’s handling of Meghan’s mental health issues. They claimed a family member had racist views when Meghan was pregnant. Harry’s 2023 memoir, “Spare,” worsened matters by describing physical aggression from William and calling Camilla “dangerous,” alleging she worked with tabloids to improve her image.
Peter Hunt, a former BBC royal correspondent, suggested that the surprise move might upset William. In the short term, Harry may further mend ties with his father. His presence might make it harder for William to avoid reconciliation.
Security Concerns
Harry holds the palace responsible for canceling his police protection during UK visits, saying it lies at the “heart” of family disputes. Harry believes the press led to his mother’s, Princess Diana’s, death. He cites such threats and paparazzi harassment as reasons for needing security. Before leaving royal life, his security was at the highest level, reduced to case-by-case assessments post-move. He often travels with private security despite previously stating he wouldn’t bring his family to the UK without safety guarantees. Questions arise if security demands have shifted or if a VIP protection committee issued a new risk assessment.
Legal Challenges
Harry’s long legal battle against the British tabloids revolves around accusations of phone hacking and hiring private investigators to gather compromising data. While he achieved victories against the Daily Mirror and a Rupert Murdoch publication, he and other celebrities, including Elton John, recently lost a case against the Daily Mail publisher. This Friday, a judge will decide the Mail’s compensation for their £34.5 million legal fees. Harry likely faces hefty costs for his lawyers as well.
