Thinking outside the box often yields rewards. Kaneland quarterback Brody Guthrie exemplifies this. Now a junior, Guthrie joined the varsity last season to back up the center. Coach Mike Thorgesen initially hesitated but decided to proceed. Thorgesen remarked, “We usually only bring kids to varsity if they’ll play extensively. But with multiple JV games, we brought Brody up. He sat behind Jalen Carter but gained experience by playing in JV games. He’s now well-prepared and understands the offense.”
Guthrie’s move proved promising. In the season’s first game, Kaneland dominated Rock Island with a 49-7 victory. The 6-foot-3, 192-pound Guthrie started strong, completing 9 of 11 passes for 203 yards and three touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Colten Van Dyke caught three passes for 73 yards and two touchdowns, while senior wideout Cooper Stombres snagged two passes for 19 yards and a touchdown.
Guthrie expressed gratification for the promotion, which provided him valuable game-time experience, especially during a Morris game when Carter got injured. “Coach Thorgesen had me learn and understand the offense, assisted by seniors and the coaching staff,” he shared. “I feel well-prepared.” Now, Carter plays as a defensive back at Northern Illinois, but he guided Guthrie in understanding plays and reads, improving his skills during 7-on-7 sessions.
Interestingly, Guthrie wasn’t always a quarterback. He began his journey in Kaneland Youth Football League as a safety and receiver. He later transitioned to offensive line and experienced significant growth, prompting him to explore the quarterback position. “In eighth grade, I grew significantly, which led me to find a new position,” Guthrie explained.
His transition to quarterback was seamless. Guthrie recalled, “In my first game, I threw a 45-yard touchdown. The experience made me love the sport and fueled my passion.” He actively participates in football, basketball, and track, while quarterback talent Mike Hohensee coaches him privately.
Guthrie trains with a Rockford-based 7-on-7 team and partakes in “The Breakfast Club,” sessions organized by Hohensee, held at 6:30 a.m. on Sundays. Coach Thorgesen appreciates Guthrie’s dedication, acknowledging his commitment to improving. Guthrie consistently works hard and cleverly maneuvers his time.
His efforts resonate with teammates, who elected him a captain. Undoubtedly, Guthrie’s influence is pivotal as the team seeks to integrate new offensive skills. Guthrie confidently stated, “We have competent players at every position who are driven to win. I’m confident of our success.”
