Hilton Grand Vacations took swift action to address a racial slur incident involving one of their employees. The incident occurred after Las Vegas Aces guard Chelsea Gray received a derogatory message following her team’s loss to the Indiana Fever. Gray shared the offensive message on her Instagram story, highlighting ongoing issues athletes face regarding discrimination.
Gray, who is 33, expressed frustration in her post, emphasizing the challenges athletes encounter beyond the game itself. She noted that such remarks exemplify a larger problem where athletes are told to focus solely on sports despite facing discrimination.
In response, Hilton Grand Vacations released a statement confirming the dismissal of the employee responsible. They stated, “His behavior was in violation of multiple company policies and does not reflect our company’s values in any way.” The company prioritized addressing the issue promptly to align with their professional standards.
The Las Vegas Aces have not commented on the situation. Meanwhile, Gray acknowledged the supportive messages she received from fans and colleagues.
The incident sheds light on ongoing harassment in the WNBA. Though the league and its players’ union have introduced initiatives to enhance security and support for players, online harassment persists. For example, Minnesota Lynx guard Courtney Williams and Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas have faced similar racially charged attacks.
Thomas, in particular, criticized WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert for not taking sufficient action. During a press session, Thomas voiced her concerns, stating that the online hostility players face extends beyond the court. She acknowledged the troubling nature of these threats and called for significant change within the league.
Both Caitlin Clark and Fever coach Stephanie White condemned the malicious messages directed at Thomas. White stressed the unacceptable nature of the escalating toxicity and racism surrounding the league, which demands immediate attention to ensure player safety and well-being.
