Former Chicago Mayor and White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel cautioned Democrats against pursuing impeachment for President Donald Trump if they achieve a majority in the House of Representatives. Appearing on NBC News’ ‘Meet the Press,’ Emanuel advised that Democrats should focus on implementing ethics reform.
Short answer: No, because it’s not going anywhere, and it’s going to be a food fight, and it’s just going to be we return to the politics of fighting,
Emanuel stated when asked about impeaching Trump. He explained that impeachment wouldn’t be successful. You’re never going to get an impeachment,
he added, emphasizing that efforts should be directed toward enacting a comprehensive ethics package. Emanuel stressed that investigations should serve as a means to deliver meaningful change.
This guidance comes as Democrats hold a notable edge over Republicans shortly before the midterm elections. In projections for the House elections, Democrats are expected to secure 215 seats compared to the Republicans’ 201. The Democratic Party only requires three additional victories from 19 competitive races to gain a majority. Conversely, Republicans would need to win at least 17 of these races.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., has not committed to supporting impeachment against Trump. In an NBC interview in June, Jeffries mentioned that their priority would be addressing affordability issues We haven’t ruled anything in or ruled anything out in terms of accountability. What we have said is that our focus is going to be to make life more affordable for the American people. We have to drive down the high cost of living,
Jeffries commented.
Emanuel, who formerly served two terms as Chicago Mayor and as chief of staff for President Barack Obama, is viewed as a potential 2028 presidential candidate. Despite his moderate stance, Emanuel supports progressive candidates like Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan. He recently stated You think people wanna support defunding the police? You think they wanna support open borders, open prisons? Run on it. I don’t, and that’s not the party’s position,
while emphasizing the Democratic Party’s internal debate between progressive and pragmatic factions.
At the Texas Tribune Festival, Emanuel expressed admiration for Democratic Texas Senate nominee James Talarico, describing him as strong
and comfortable in discussing his faith.
Upon being asked about supporting El-Sayed’s bid, Emanuel initially deferred, stating, Look, I mean, it doesn’t matter what I do… it matters what the Michigan voters think.
Later, he affirmed his support for the Democrats in the Senate race.
