The latest episode of HBO’s House of the Dragon fast-forwards two years in our time, although only a few seconds have elapsed in Westeros. If you need a refresher on past events, this recap will help, along with previews of previous seasons.
Opening Scenes and Key Events
As the episode begins, viewers find themselves in the Vale, witnessing Rhaena’s pursuit of the wild dragon, Sheepstealer. After some initial hesitation, Sheepstealer finally shares a meal with her, marking the start of their alliance. Rhaena’s story illustrates her reliance on actions rather than words.
In another part of the realm, King Aegon and Larys’s absence is noted by Aemond, leading to impulsive reactions. Disguised in a carriage, Aegon faces his own struggles, including withdrawal from pain medications. Their journey north is interrupted by soldiers loyal to Queen Rhaenyra, but Larys convinces them to spare their lives in exchange for taking them to Rhaenyra.
Plans for Power and Control
Meanwhile, on Dragonstone, Rhaenyra shares her intent to claim the Iron Throne in King’s Landing, believing its defenses will be weakened. Despite concerns of entrapment from her advisors, she instructs Corlys to redirect part of the fleet and orders Daemon to return from Harrenhal.
Back in King’s Landing, Alicent discovers Aemond claiming the throne. His newfound confidence is challenged by forthcoming threats, including armies led by Ormund Hightower, his son Daeron, and a fleet led by Tyland Lannister and Sharako Lohar.
Armies Gather and Skirmishes Unfold
In the Riverlands, Daemon leads victorious forces, aided by Northmen known as the Winter Wolves. This group, led by Roddy the Ruin, presents Daemon with the head of Jason Lannister, a significant gesture in the Westerosi culture.
Elsewhere, Gwayne Hightower’s encounter with Criston Cole highlights the looming transformation of characters in the face of ongoing conflicts. The Isle of Faces becomes a refuge for dragonseeds Ulf, Hugh, and Addam. Their unease grows upon encountering Alys Rivers, adding mysticism to the area.
Decisive Moves and Mystical Encounters
At the Red Keep, Alicent forges Aemond’s name on orders to delay Ormund’s advance toward King’s Landing. This subterfuge hints at Aemond’s inner fears regarding Rhaenyra’s dragons. Alicent uses emotional manipulation to persuade Aemond to leave for Harrenhal, proving effective.
As the episode progresses, news of an attack on the Black Fleet prompts Rhaenyra to set off on her dragon. However, Jacaerys responds by confining her for safety, taking command alongside Baela to face the impending clash.
Sea Battles and Shifting Tides
The Battle of the Gullet showcases Corlys’s expertise in naval warfare against Sharako’s fleet. Despite Corlys’s efforts, Sharako’s tactics successfully infiltrate High Tide, though the entrance of Rhaena and Sheepstealer turns the tide.
During this chaos, Vermax succumbs to his injuries, leading to Jacaerys’s tragic end. The episode closes as both sides assess the aftermath, setting the stage for future confrontations.
Episode Reflections
This episode deftly reintroduced characters and set the stage for significant developments. The pacing and strategy displayed surpassed certain elements in prior iterations of Game of Thrones. It laid the groundwork for more intense events in upcoming episodes.
