Rep. Andy Ogles Defeated in Primary by Challenger Charlie Hatcher
On Thursday evening, Rep. Andy Ogles, R-Tenn., lost in a primary to Charlie Hatcher, a Republican challenger with a background as a farmer and former Tennessee commissioner of agriculture. Though initially not a major focus of the 2026 primaries, this race highlighted significant dynamics within the Republican Party.
The primary saw a split in endorsements, with President Donald Trump backing Ogles, while Tennessee Governor Bill Lee supported Hatcher. Environmental policy also played a pivotal role, attracting a substantial $2 million in spending by the Invest in Tomorrow Coalition super PAC against Ogles and in favor of Hatcher. This group drew attention due to its significant fundraising of $6.7 million in the current year.
“When you have a group spending roughly $2 million in a Republican primary, that tells you how much money they’re making off of government subsidies, and they’re upset that the government welfare has been taken away from them,” Ogles told Fox News Digital.
Ogles argued that these financial efforts demonstrated a response to his stance against government funding for renewable energy, reflecting broader Republican views against the Biden Administration’s energy investments.
The super PAC opposing Ogles received substantial backing from Chris Larsen, chairman of Ripple, who has donated extensively to Democratic causes. Larsen’s financial contributions underscored the influence of private funding in political contests.
Ogles attributed his political vulnerability not only to his opposition to renewable energy subsidies but also to his alignment with Trump. “It’s because I’m close to the president. It is because I am outspoken. And quite frankly, it is because I speak plainly on these issues,” he remarked.
Hatcher, on the other hand, presented himself as a candidate free from entrenched political interests. Emphasizing his agricultural background, he advocated for common sense and a cooperative approach to problem-solving. Additionally, he voiced support for the Trump Administration’s agenda.
Governor Lee endorsed Hatcher late Tuesday, highlighting their personal and professional relationship. “He served as my commissioner of agriculture; I know Charlie. I know his conservative values and how much he loves our country,” Lee stated.
Trump reaffirmed his endorsement of Ogles by recognizing him as an inspiring and steadfast supporter. “Andy has always been there when we needed him and when I needed him,” Trump noted on Truth Social earlier in the year.
Having secured the Republican nomination, Hatcher now advances to the general election set for November 3, where he is expected to have a strong showing. In his previous election, he won by a significant margin.
